Soy atea y considero que las religiones son una forma de neurosis colectiva. by Frida Kahlo
Translation: I am an atheist and I consider religions to be a form of collective neurosis.
Frida Kahlo is considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists. Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyocoan, Mexico City, Mexico.
She was a painter, socialist, and atheist.
She wrote these words in a protest letter to the president of Mexico when Diego Rivera’s painting, Dreams of a Sunday in the Alameda, was covered up before the opening in the Hotel del Prado — a new government establishment in Mexico City.
Rivera had painted a depiction of one of the historical figures populating the mural — the 19th-century Mexican poet, journalist, atheist, and progressive politician Ignacio Ramírez, portrayed holding a sign inscribed with his credo, Dios no existe — “God does not exist.”
The government refused to show it for nine years until Rivera covered up the Dios no existe sign.
Unfortunately, Kahlo’s letter and other progressive voices and pressure did not work to save the atheist sign in the painting.
The beautiful painting without the atheist sign lives on in the museum across the street from the Hotel del Prado.
